Frequently Asked Questions

Gutter Solutions, LLC

Q.) Why are gutters important?

A.) Gutters direct rainwater away from your home’s foundation, preventing soil erosion, basement flooding, and water damage to the structure. They also protect siding, windows, and doors from water stains and rot.

Q.) How often should gutters be cleaned?

A.) Generally speaking, gutters should be cleaned at least twice a year, in the spring and fall. If your home is near trees, more frequent cleaning may be necessary to prevent clogs from leaves and debris.

Q.) What are the signs that gutters need cleaning?

A.) Overflowing water, sagging gutters, plant growth in the gutter, and water stains on your home’s exterior are all signs that your gutters are clogged and need cleaning.

Q.) What are the most common types of gutter materials?

A.) Common gutter materials include aluminum, vinyl, steel, and copper. Aluminum is lightweight and rust-resistant making it the go-to choice for residential homes, while copper is durable but more expensive. Steel gutters are mostly used for commercial buildings due to their strength and rigidity. Vinyl can be less expensive but it is less durable and generally not recommended.

Q.) 5. What size gutters do I need?

A.) Most homes use 5-inch gutters, but homes with steep roofs or heavy rainfall may benefit from 6-inch gutters. Gutter Solutions, LLC offers both 5-inch and 6-inch gutters, and will be happy to help determine the appropriate size you need based on your home’s roof size, local climate, and other factors.

Q.) How long do gutters last?

A.) Depending on the material, gutters can last up to 50 years. Aluminum gutters usually last around 20 years, while copper gutters can last 50 years with proper maintenance.

Q.) What are seamless gutters, and are they better?

A.) Seamless gutters are custom-made to fit your home and have fewer joints/seams, reducing the chance of leaks and improving curb appeal. They tend to be more durable and require less maintenance compared to sectional gutters.

Q.) How much do new gutters cost?

A.) The cost of new gutters varies greatly depending on the location, height, material, length, and labor involved. On average, installing aluminum gutters can range from $8 to $20 per linear foot, while copper gutters can cost between $35 and $45 per linear foot.

Q.) Can I install gutters myself?

A.) Gutter installation can be a DIY project, but it requires accurate measurements, tools, and safety precautions. Professional installation is almost always recommended, especially for seamless gutters, to ensure proper water flow and attachment. Water damage from improper installation of gutters can be much more costly than hiring a local gutter company.

Q.) How do I know if my gutters are properly pitched?

A.) Gutters should slope about 1/4 inch for every 10 feet to ensure water flows toward the downspout at the ideal rate. If water sits in the gutter and/or overflows in places, it may be improperly pitched and need adjustment.

Q.) Do I need gutter guards?

A.) Gutter guards can help reduce the frequency of gutter cleaning by preventing leaves and debris from clogging the system. However, they may still need occasional maintenance and are not foolproof. Here at Gutter Solutions, LLC we offer three different types of gutter guards, each one having its own distinct differences that help it excel in specific situations.

Q.) What are the best gutter guards?

A.) The best gutter guards mainly depend on your environment and budget. Mesh screens, micro-mesh filters, and reverse curve systems are the three different options that Gutter Solutions, LLC offers. Any of the three can be considered the best option in different circumstances. Stainless steel mesh is highly effective but more expensive than aluminum. Reverse curve (surface tension) systems are excellent at keeping debris out, however during a heavy downpour it is likely that the water will spill over the outside of the gutter. Aluminum mesh screens work excellent and a good balance between letting water pass through and keeping debris out.

Q.) Why do gutters overflow during heavy rain?

A.) Gutters may overflow if they are clogged with debris, undersized for the roof, or improperly pitched. Cleaning your gutters, upgrading to a larger size, or adjusting the slope can resolve overflow issues.

Q.) Can gutters affect my home’s foundation?

A.) Yes, poorly functioning gutters can lead to foundation issues. Water pooling near the foundation can cause soil erosion and cracks, which may lead to basement flooding or structural damage over time.

Q.) What is a downspout, and how does it work?

A.) A downspout is a vertical pipe that carries water from the gutters to the ground or drainage system. The industry standard is having one downspout per 30-40 linear feet of gutter. Properly placed downspouts should direct water at least 6-10 feet away from the foundation to avoid damage, and allow the water to drain from the gutter fast enough so that the gutter doesn’t overflow.

Q.) How can I prevent animals from nesting in my gutters?

A.) Installing gutter guards or covers can prevent animals like birds, squirrels, and insects from nesting in gutters. Regular maintenance and trimming nearby trees can also help deter them.

Q.) What is the best way to maintain gutters?

A.) Regular cleaning, inspecting for leaks, ensuring proper water flow, and checking the downspouts are key steps in gutter maintenance. Installing gutter guards can reduce the amount of debris that accumulates.

Q.) How do I repair leaking gutters?

A.) Leaking gutters can be repaired by sealing cracks with gutter sealant or replacing worn-out sections. If the joints are leaking, silicone can be used to improve the seal and should be done by a professional.

Q.) Can clogged gutters cause roof damage?

A.) Yes, clogged gutters can cause water to back up and overflow onto the roof, fascia board, and soffit. This will lead to rot, mold growth, and roof leaks. Regular gutter cleaning is essential to prevent this type of damage.
